2-day Kanban Classes - changes for 2014

Posted on December 11, 2013 by David Anderson

After 5 years of teaching 2-day Kanban classes and almost 4 years since the book, Kanban - Successful Evolutionary Change for Your Technology Business, which became the foundation for our training curriculum, and almost 300 classes later, we are making changes to the official Lean Kanban University training curriculum for 2-day classes. The existing Practitioner Level curriculum is being split into 2 x 2-day classes. These will be known as the Foundation Level curriculum and the Advanced Practitioner Level curriculum...

The Foundation Level curriculum is designed to help people understand kanban systems for knowledge work services, understand the Kanban method, and understand the System Thinking Approach to Introducing Kanban for a single service within a technology or creative business. This class is intended to give attendees the basics for how to think about improving service delivery using Kanban. While it does cover all the essential elements and mechanics, it does not cover advanced topics such as resistance to change and how to "sell" Kanban or evolutionary change into an organization. These advanced topics are reserved for the 3-day Kanban Coaching Professional Masterclass - Leading Change.

The official Lean Kanban University licensed training class, created by David J. Anderson & Mike Burrows of David J. Anderson & Associates, has the title "Getting Started with Kanban - Improving Service Delivery."

The Advanced Practitioner Level Curriculum is designed to focus on those who are already using Kanban within their organizations but want to take it to a higher level - the emphasis is on scaling to large projects, multiple inter-dependent services, program and portfolio level, and developing the organizational capability and understanding for evolutionary change and model-driven improvements. This 2nd 2-day class goes beyond the scope of the current textbook and includes ideas and learning that has emerged since 2009.

The official Lean Kanban University licensed training class, created by David J. Anderson & Mike Burrows of David J. Anderson & Associates, has the title "Practicing Kanban at Scale - Successful Evolutionary Improvements in your Enterprise."

The new curriculum was developed by Mike Burrows and David Anderson while on a company retreat in Phoenix, Arizona in October and has been out for review from Accredited Kanban Trainers (AKTs) over the last 2 months. Introducing a new curriculum is always challenging and the Advanced Practitioner classes will initially be offered by a limited number of trainers - David J. Anderson, Mike Burrows, Dragos Dumitriu and Russell Healy. David J. Anderson will be touring Europe in the first and second quarters of 2014 co-training the new advanced class with a selection of European AKTs.

During the introductory period, some training firms will continue to offer the older Practitioner Level curriculum. The sunset period for the Practitioner Level curriculum started on 1st January 2014 and ends on 30th June 2014 after which time it will no longer be offered.
